Questions and Answers

I have a silver dollar, it was printed in 1878. On the back of it it says the United States Of America, and 120 grains 900 Fine, Trade Dollar. Can you please help me understand if this is worth anything. Thanks

Hi, Evone! Let me start out by saying that trade dollars are one of the most commonly counterfeited US coins. Is there a mint mark on the back of the coin underneath the eagle? There should be an S or CC indicating that the coin was minted in San Francisco or Carson City. Carson city coins are highly sought by collectors. If your trade dollar has a CC mint mark on it with rim damage i see in the picture it should be a coin in a $700 range. If your coin has an S mint mark in it the value is in $90-130 range. You should check the authenticity of your coin. The easisest way is to try picking it up with a magnet. Real silver never gets picked up with a magnet. Another easy way to check your coin is to weigh it. A trade dollar weighs 27.22 grams. Counterfeits are normally underweight. Please let me know if you have any questions. Andrei
