Coin Appraisal in Hoboken, NJ

If you live in Hoboken, you don't have to cross the river or drive out to a highway mall to find out what your coins are worth. Honest Coin Shop is right here in town, at 46 Newark St, Suite 201, on the second floor above Barsky Gallery. Owner and numismatist Andrei H explains what he sees in plain language.

Getting Here from Anywhere in Hoboken

Hoboken is a mile-square city, so for most residents the trip is a walk, not a drive.

• Downtown and near the waterfront: Newark Street is just a few blocks from Hoboken Terminal and the PATH station. Walk up from the terminal or over from Washington Street and you're there in minutes.

• Midtown and uptown: Take Washington Street south, on foot, by bike share or on a bus heading toward the terminal, then turn onto Newark Street.

• Southwest Hoboken: Head east along Newark Street itself, or take the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail to the 2nd Street stop or Hoboken Terminal and walk from there.

Street parking downtown can be hard to find, so leaving the car at home is usually easiest. If you have heavy boxes or a large collection to bring, call us first and we'll help you plan the visit.

What to Expect During Your Appraisal

Every appraisal is a private, unhurried conversation at our desk. We don't just glance at a coin and name a number.

• We look at each coin's date, mint mark, condition and metal content.

• We tell you which pieces are collector coins and which are worth mainly their gold or silver.

• We show you how we reached our opinion, so you understand what you have.

• If you want to sell, we can make an offer. If you don't, you leave with your coins and no pressure.

Walk-ins welcome. Appointments preferred for dedicated service, especially for larger collections.

What Hoboken Residents Usually Bring

Hoboken is a city of moves: a growing family leaving a walk-up, a brownstone sold after decades, a parent's apartment being cleared. Coins often turn up in those moments. Things we regularly appraise include:

• Inherited coin collections, albums and folders

• Morgan and Peace silver dollars

• Pre-1965 US silver dimes, quarters and half dollars

• US and world gold coins

• Silver and gold bullion coins and rounds

• Proof sets and mint sets collected by parents or grandparents

• Foreign coins brought home from travel or from family abroad

• Old coin jars and mixed lots from a closet or drawer

You are welcome to bring one coin or several boxes.

• Experienced evaluation: your coins are examined by staff trained in precious metals and rare coins.

• Straight explanations: you learn why a coin is or isn't valuable, not just a number.

• No obligation: an appraisal is about information. Selling is always your choice.

Questions Hoboken Clients Often Ask

Do I need an appointment?

Walk-ins are welcome. Appointments are preferred for dedicated service, so we recommend calling (347) 580-9541 first. That way we can set aside time for you, and you won't wait if we're with another client.

Should I clean my coins before I bring them in?

No. Please don't clean, polish or rinse them. Cleaning can scratch the surface and lower a coin's collector value. Bring them exactly as you found them, ideally in their original holders, albums or envelopes.

Do I have to sell if I get an appraisal?

Not at all. Many Hoboken clients come in simply to understand what a family collection is worth before deciding to keep it, divide it among relatives or sell it later.
